MANNA DEY , THE SINGER WHO POURED SOUL INTO A SONG- CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL

Living legend singer Manna Dey is no more.

We in Kerala remember him for his famous soul stirring song in Malayalam movie Chemmen. He was a Bengali with a Malayali wife.

This movie won the President's gold medal in 1965.

The movie revolved around a fisherman's Hindu wife and her lover before marriage , a Muslim fish trader middleman.

Forbidden love of course -- but it went further.

The belief was that a fisherman's wife must NOT lose her chastity when her husband is at sea.  Lest Kadalamma ( mother sea ) gets angry and devours the man.

In this case the fisherman drowns , and the lovers commit suicide-- this was REAL love, they never had sex..

At dawn the villagers get to see  three cadavers washed ashore -- a huge shark and both the lovers in an embrace.

The husband was sucked in by a whirlpool, along with his boat.

A hooked on frenzied shark dragged him to this whirlpool.

This movie also won prizes at Cannes and Chicago fest.

The video is a song where the married woman Karuthamma is woken up from sleep by a familiar voice her old flame Pareekutty -serendipity at its best.

Maanasa Maine varu, madhuram nulli tharu…
Come hither oh bird of my dreams , give me a drop of your nectar
------X

Karalile mohavum kadalile olavum adungila

The endless waves from the heart or ocean , can they be harnessed ?

Kalikootu karane marannu poyo?
Have you forgotten your old flame?

RIP !
