dear XXX,
I CALL THIS AN INTELLIGENT FILTER --
FOR CORRUGATION HAS INCREASED ITS EFFECTIVE SURFACE AREA BY > 100% --
this " thumbs up " is NOT for engine room cosmetics at all --
it is for sustaining PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING --
-- if you see latest model vacuum cleaners -- they all have gone for the corrugated filters , instead of saggy air bags --
most problems in internal combustion machinery in engine room is due to lack of air volume in the cylinder.
a look at the smoke emission from the funnel clearly shows when air is starved.
it has become STYLISH and TRENDY to put THICK pad filters on ME and AE turbochargers --
visiting superintendents always give good reports for such mindless acts , even in pressurized engine rooms with funnel door and skylights open --
when i went back on XXX the second time ( after 3 years of delivery ) -- the engine room had developed amazing engineering problems -- vital machinery would just break into pieces.
i joined at XXX ( with an active volcano spewing ash , 1 mile off the berth ) - --
-- on departure, as soon as the pilot was dropped, i called up chief engineer ( all know who this is ) and told him to remove all filters on ER vents --
since he was NOT willing to remove it , and was ready to fight over it -- i had to threaten him with DISMISSAL WITHOUT NOTICE at next port ( i was dead serious !!) --
--and then it was done el pronto -
the ship had a VAST CRITICAL RANGE between half ahead and full ahead of main engines --
-- excessive time to MOVE THROUGH this banned range-- caused excessive vibrations -- the funnel stack vibrates like crazy --
if the boiler stack vibrates -- the downcomer caused the boiler circ pump shaft to vibrate -- the causes the bearings to disintegrate and pump shaft to break--
this was a recurrent problem. all were on a wild goose chase -- doing mindless CURE day after day--
-- never any PREVENTION --
vibrations in engine room can cause a mechanical woodward governor of generator engines to malfunction -- after all it is flying centrifugal weights --
-- and a blackout--
all machinery in ER has its own NATURAL frequency.
they will RESONATE joyfully by raising or lowering their frequency at max amplitude.
a series of such vibrations will multiply several times its own pitch thus increasing HARMONICALLY all that are nearby--
