dear XXX,
you may wonder what is the big deal, in starting a LB engine--
everybody does it.

but then be surprised--

every ship of  XXX i have asked the "entire" officers/ crew how to
start a life boat engine -- the pass percentage is CLASSIFIED --

all are present in such meetings and they stand in line --

every body wants to start the car with gear engaged!!

i have popped this question to shore suptds and shore auditors
too-- the percentage is classified --

HOW TO START A LB ENGINE--

####################################

on the telegraph handle fulcrum base (of the LB) , there is a red
plastic button.

THUMB RULE:--
when this button is OUT it means the gear is IN --
when this button is IN it means the gear is OUT ( neutral )

so first press the button IN at telegraph in stop posn .

put the telegraph to half ahead posn.
turn the key to crank the engine
as soon as the engine roars to life ( the propeller wont turn )

put the telegraph to stop
the red button pops out by spring action automatically ( now propeller
is engaged )

now put the telegraph ahead or astern to propel the boat

######################################

if you crank your car engine wih engine / wheel engaged in gears -  it
will jump like a kangaroo and kill somebody in front.  here it boils
down to overheating and destroying your LB battery.
